Kira Spin

In 2016, The Starr Group employees agreed to sponsored our first Make-A-Wish child. The in-office response was so heart-warming that we decided to sponsor another child in 2017. We met our 2017 MakeWish Child Kira when she visited The Starr Group office on March 29 with her mother. Kira talked about coping with her diagnosis of Childhood Leukemia and the revolutionary Bone Marrow treatment she received at Children’s Hospital involving stem cell therapy. Kira was the first person in the state of Wisconsin to receive this kind of treatment. “I think it’s working well!” she said.

Kira graduated high school in Spring. Her illness prevented her from attending Brookfield East for the greater part of the school year. She had been taking courses online. “It’s the best senior year ever!” she laughed. She expected to be well enough to join her classmates again for the end of the school year and graduation.

Kira is a ballerina and she recently danced in “The Story of Moses” at Elmbrook Church.

Medical bills have made family finances a little tight. Ever the optimist, Kira’s Wish is to have tuition for her freshman year at UW-Steven’s Point where she plans to double major in Wildlife Ecology and dance. “I love animals,” she explained, “but I’m not ready to give up dancing just yet!”

The Starr GroupTeam will once again participate in the annual Make A Wish Walk for Wishes on Saturday August 26.  The event will take place at Henry Maier Festival Park (the Summerfest grounds). We are so close to the new school year and we'd like Kira's first year of college to be as worry-free as possible. Please consider donating by visiting our team page on the Make-A-Wish website. You can choose to support any one of our team members by selecting their name from the list. Please consider helping us in this effort by contributing any amount you can - $10, $20, $50 or even more. EVERY dollar you donate will go directly to Kira’s Tuition. Your generosity is appreciated!

The Best of the Best Committee Lemonade Stand on August 17, 2017 was a success. The event took place on the front lawn of The Starr Group building at 5005 W. Loomis Road (at the corner of Loomis and Edgerton in Greenfield). For four hours, patrons stopped for lemonade and baked treats and gave any amount they felt comfortable donating to the cause. Neighbors walked over, customers stopped, and strangers just passing by honked, waved, smiled and donated. Every dollar earned will go toward Kira's College Fund.

One patron stopped and told us: "I graduated from Stevens Point. When I read The Starr Group's post on its Facebook page, it just tugged as my heartstrings!"

Another patron pulled over and said: "College is not cheap! I ought to know! I AM in college!"

A young man on a bicycle rode past to his destination, and stopped upon returning: "I just thought I'd help."

Two employees of The Starr Group took turns dressed as the agency's mascots: Lionel and Lionardo.

The young son of one of our staff spent the entire afternoon dressed as one of The Starr Group Lions. Jack totally took command of the afternoon, pouring lemonade, taking donation and talking to customers. He even posed for a few photos. He told his mom, "This is the best time ever!" She laughed, "We took him to Disney World this summer... and this is the 'best time ever'!"

Jack asked another employee of The Starr Group, "Will you be doing this next year?" If Jack is willing, we're sure we'll find a way to do it again. Jack's parents should be very proud of their son's work ethic and charitable nature. (We are!)

The cash box is still being tallied as of this writing. We'll report on the take as soon as we have numbers!

The Starr GroupTeam held an inter-office Silent Auction through the month of July to raise money for Kira's tuition. Employees donated items such as sports tickets, gift baskets, vacation time shares and framed art to the cause each week. Co-workers bid on the items early, but the real action took place 5 minutes before closing each Friday. There were rumors of colleauges wrestling on the floor in the halls to get the last bid in! Of course, these were just rumors...

The event was a tremendous success, bringing in $1,494 to go toward Kira's tuition! Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who bid on the items.

On June 10, 2017, we participated in the “Starr Spin”, a fund raiser for Kira’s tuition. We burned calories in a Spin Class to raise donations for Kira’s cause. We refer to it as “Burnin’ for Kira’s Learnin’!” At this event, The Starr Group employees along with their family and friends raised over $1,000!

Please consider helping us in this effort by contributing any amount you can - $10, $20, $50 or even more. EVERY dollar you donate will go directly to Kira’s Tuition. Your generosity will bring this sweet girl one step closer to her “Wish”!
