City of Milwaukee Home Improvement Contractor's License
Since many of our clients require the use of a Home Improvement Contractor's License, we thought it would be a good idea to provide a brief recap of this license and share one recent change that will affect the renewal process.
The City of Milwaukee defines the Home Improvement Contractor's License as a "license required for those engaged in the business of installing, repairing, servicing, improving, or remodeling any permanent installation or improvement attached to an existing home or building used for residence purposes but not exceeding 6 living units." This license costs $250 and if issued in an even-numbered year, will be valid until February 28th of the next even-numbered year. Likewise, if the license is issued in an odd-numbered year, it will be valid until February 28th of the next odd-numbered year.
In order to obtain or renew this license, you must submit a license application and certificate of insurance to the City of Milwaukee. While these forms will be mailed to you well in advance of the February 28th date, you must pay close attention to when these forms are due to the City to avoid being assessed a $25 late charge. On a positive note, the City implemented a recent change effective on October 29, 2010 eliminating the need to submit a $1,000 performance bond with the application, thereby making the process a bit easier.
